As the regular season draws to a close, two more Spread the Love recipients were given the opportunity to experience a Timbers game at JELD-WEN Field.

Meet Marlynn:
Marlynn Schotland and her family were the recipients of the Spread the Love welcome packet for the September 29th game vs. the LA Galaxy. Pat Brown, who works at ROOT Sports directing Timbers telecasts, nominated Marlynn. Pat worked with both Marlynn and her husband several years ago at a local television station.

Marlynn says she and her family were thrilled to receive their welcome packet.

“We feel very, very lucky to have received this awesome packet of goodies, on top of the tickets,” said Marlynn. “The scarves are great and we can wear them all the time this winter.”

Marlynn was most excited to share the experience with her children.

“Our daughter just started playing youth soccer,” she explained, “and we were excited for her to see the pros play in person.”

The best part, according to Marlynn?

“The goal by [Maximiliano] Urruti! That was awesome! The energy was also amazing -- we were seated next to some die-hard Timbers fans who were so nice and made the game even more fun.”

Meet Víctor:
Víctor Barreda Pazos and his family received a Spread the Love welcome packet from Karen Willoughby, Director of Coaching at Hollywood Soccer Club. Karen coaches Victor’s three-year-old son. Víctor recently moved to Portland from Spain and had yet to experience a Timbers game.

“I used to attend Villarreal CF games,” said Víctor. “Even when it was in the Champions league. I was curious how it was here in the USA.”

Víctor says he was very excited and grateful when he received his welcome packet. It was the first soccer game he was able to attend with his son. The Pazos family attended the Timbers match on October 19th, a heated 1-0 win over rival Seattle.

Víctor says his favorite part of the game was the very end.

“The end of it when everybody was singing and enjoying the victory,” he said, “without a rush to going back home.”

The final regular-season home game for the Portland Timbers also means one last opportunity for Timbers fans to enjoy one of Portland’s finest food carts at JELD-WEN Field. Once again, the Timbers welcome back Portland Timbers Food Cart Alliance member 808 Grinds.

Childhood friends Kevin Scofield and Jensen Kip started 808 Grinds in September 2010. The Maui-raised duo brought their Hawaiian lunch creations to SW 9th and Washington in downtown Portland, and it was so popular that they were among the first food carts voted in by Facebook fans to be part of the PTFCA.

808 Grinds will be serving their Hawaiian combo plates at the Soccer City Grill located above Section 93 when the Portland Timbers host Real Salt Lake on Saturday at 7:30 PM PT (ROOT SPORTS, 750 AM The Game).

Not only are Thorns FC players champions on the field, they strive to create and build champions within the community. The Rose City Readers program was implemented to do just that -- make third graders at the “I Have A Dream” Foundation Dreamer School Alder Elementary, champions in reading.

Thorns FC players will attend third grade classrooms on a monthly basis reading books to students focusing on the importance of physical education, health and other central topics.

On October 9, Rachel Buehler and Meleana Shim browsed the library at Alder Elementary looking for books to read to students. “I want to read them Polar Express!” Shim commented. After 15 minutes of searching, it was time to read to the first class. There was a buzz of whispers and smiles between the classrooms when Buehler and Shim were first spotted. When introduced as professional women soccer players, jaws dropped and questions sprung from their mouths. They ranged from who their favorite soccer player was to what their favorite food was. Sticking to the theme of eating healthy, Buehler answered vegetables while Shim answered with mangos.

In the first classroom, Buehler and Shim read “Surfer Chick” by Kristey Dempsey, which focused on the importance of a positive attitude, practice makes perfect and never giving up. For the second group of third graders, they read “Dear Mrs. Lurue: Letters From Detention School” by Mark Teague, which centered on looking at all points of view in every situation. During the last session, students had the chance to read to Buehler and Shim in a one-on-one environment.

Focusing on reading proficiency in the third grade is a critical step toward increasing the number of students who succeed academically and ultimately in life. During the third grade, students are transitioning from learning to read, using basic knowledge of the alphabet, to reading to learn. The Rose City Readers program inspires youth in the classroom by harnessing the power of sport and mentorship to magnify the importance of reading. The Thorns FC players have a unique ability to motivate students to improve their reading skills and increase their passion for education.

Shyvonne Williams, the “I Have A Dream” Foundation Alder Program Manager, was excited about the program. “We are so pleased ‘Stand Together’ thought of Alder. It went amazing today and we cannot wait to have the players back next month!”

That’s right. Add brewmaster to the list of Caleb Porter’s many talents. The Portland Timbers head coach recently teamed up with Widmer Brothers Brewing Company to come up with their newest creation – Big Hearts and Brass Balls, A Caleb Porter.

Porter visited the Widmer Brothers pilot brewery at the Moda Center in late August to help brew this special recipe with Widmer Brothers brewer and longtime Timbers fan Ben Dobler: a smooth Porter brewed with roasted malts and naked oats that offers roast, subtle chocolate character, and a velvety mouthfeel. This highly drinkable beer is ready just in time for the heated Cascadia Cup rivalry match against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday, October 13th, and for the MLS Cup playoff push to close the 2013 regular season.

The name of the beer comes from a statement Porter made following the Timbers victory over FC Dallas in June.

“…they [the Timbers] continued to show me that they have big hearts and brass balls, because they know how to get it done when the game is on the line. That’s the mark of a good team.”

The beer will be available in limited release. There will be nine total kegs at JELD-WEN Field during the Timbers vs. Sounders game on October 13th – one on the Widmer Brothers Southern Front and eight at two beer portables (near section 101 and 110) behind the Timbers Army.

Additionally, the porter will be served at the following bars starting on 10/13:

  • Kingston
  • Kells 21
  • Thirsty Lion
  • Cheerful Bullpen
  • Gigantic Brewing

Get it while it lasts! Once it's gone, it's gone.
