This weekend’s Portland Timbers Food Cart Alliance featured food cart is Garden Monsters.

Garden Monsters specializes in made-to-order entrée-sized salads that are made from 100% natural, organic, and local ingredients.

Kyle Hulings opened Garden Monsters on February 3, 2013, after a year of preparation. He says after being laid off from his job in November 2011, he spent over a month trying to figure out what he wanted to do next when the idea came to him.

“I woke up with an idea and immediately began putting it down on paper,” said Hulings. “Five hours later I had half my menu written down and felt absolutely certain that I knew what I was supposed to do with the next chapter in my life.”

Hulings says he spent seven months putting together a complete business plan and financial analysis, but had a hard time convincing a bank to fund his venture due to the youthful nature of his business.

“I spent the next few weeks incredibly discouraged,” he says, “but with support of my friends who I call family I decided to change my attitude and began adjusting my plans. With the help of my life savings and several great friends we were able to construct and launch the first Garden Monsters food cart”

He says that the Portland Timbers Food Cart Alliance is a huge opportunity for him to showcase his brand new food cart to the city of Portland.

“Being just a few months old and getting the highest amount of votes in round 2 has put a near permanent smile on my face since April,” he said. “I treasure the chance to be here and I know this is going to be a huge push towards swift and long term success for Garden Monsters.”

Garden Monsters will be serving at the Soccer City Grill above section 93 during the Timbers vs. Galaxy game on July 13, the Thorns vs. Western NY game on July 14 and the Timbers Reserves vs. LA Galaxy Reserve game on July 14. Fans will be able to choose from the following menu items:

Continuing the new tradition of the presentation of roses following Thorns games to the goal scorers and goalkeeper who achieved a shutout, Girls, Inc. has been sending participants from their great youth programs to meet players after the game and hand them the roses in front of the North End supporters. For an organization that looks to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold, it's truly a special moment after the match.

July 6 vs. Boston Breakers - Eilish Koch

What was your favorite part of the day?
I think my favorite part was the game, all of it.

What did you just do about five minutes ago?
I got to meet all of the players and the captain [Christine Sinclair] gave me her armband and I got a scarf from the coach (Cindy Parlow Cone). It was really cool.

Did you get to meet your favorite player?
Yes, the goalie Karina LeBlanc.

Why is she your favorite player?
I like how she busts into the game, throws it and catches the ball, I think it is really cool.

What makes you strong?
I am strong because if there is a girl hurt on the playground I will help her up and take her to the office even when I want to play the other games.

What makes you smart?
I am smart because I can be kooky and crazy and weird, but I can also be serious and attentive and (long pause) boring.

What makes you bold?
I am bold because I can stand up in front of a bunch of people and make a speech, or sing a song, or do a comedy act and I can be outward, do it with a strong voice and make eye contact.

Do you play sports?
I play sports, but I am not on a team.

What’s your favorite sport to play?
I have to say I like wrestling. I like the movement, locking and using pressure. I don’t want to hurt anybody I just like wrestling.

Do you think you’ll come back to another game?
Yah! I like to watch and I’ll try to get my cousin, Emily, back into playing.

Saturday's featured Portland Timbers Food Cart Alliance member is PoppedART. PoppedART will be serving their signature kettlecorn bowls topped with nontraditional toppings such as salted caramel drizzle, bacon and maple, and sweet jalapeño lime at the Soccer City Grill concession stand above Section 93.

Cole and Cheryl Akeman operate their cart at SW 9th and Washington in downtown Portland. Cole says they are very excited to be part of the Portland Thorns game on Saturday.

"Serving our PoppedArt at JELD-WEN [Field] is an exciting opportunity to introduce ourselves to the people of Portland," said Akeman. "We feel honored to be a part of Portland's vibrant food scene and are looking forward to seeing all of you!"

Fans can choose from the following menu options:

Salted Caramel Drizzle: Classic kettle corn with warm caramel sauce and a pinch of salt.

Sweet Jalapeño Lime: Sweet and spicy with a hint of lime.

Bacon and Maple: Real bacon bits and warm maple syrup.

During the Timbers match vs. Monarcas Morelia on July 3rd, the Soccer City Grill will be featuring authentic Mexican food from Portland Timbers Food Cart Alliance member Mixteca Catering.

Mixteca will be serving traditional Mexican dishes such as chicken and vegan tamales, picaditas, and tostadas from the Soccer City Grill concession stand above Section 93 in the southeast corner of the stadium.

Mixteca opened its first cart one year ago at the St. Johns Farmers Market. Their second cart opened later at the Lloyd Farmers Market. Guadencio Felipe of Mixteca says being part of both farmers markets is nice because it allows Mixteca to serve to both a family atmosphere and a business professional environment. Mixteca is currently working with Haciencda Community Development Corporation in order to open a third cart at the Mercado Latino.

Felipe says serving at the Timbers game on Wednesday is a huge step forward into being part of the Portland food scene.

“We see this event as an opportunity for people to sample food and to get to know us,” Felipe said. “Mixteca Catering would not have imagined that we could be part of the Timbers Organization and have tremendous support for small local businesses.”

As part of our inaugural group of ticket holders, Brandon won the chance to have a VIP experience for the Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids match on June 23rd, including KeyBank Club seats, and a chance to visit with Timber Joey on the field!

We asked Brandon a few questions after the match:

When was your first match supporting the Timbers?

Having only been an Oregon resident for five years I don't have extensive history with the club, but coming from a state with no pro-sports teams I jumped on my first chance to attend a USL-era match in 2009 and became infatuated with the atmosphere. Looking on at the Army from 216 I decided that I wanted to be a part of that as soon as possible.

What was your favorite moment of this match?

Favorite moment of the match should be any one of the three beautiful goals by any standard, but I'd like to go a little oddball and claim Jewsbury's clear in front of what was a very open net as my favorite moment. Had the Rapids slotted that goal away and given themselves a pick me up they could've easily turned the match in their favor.

What is your prediction for the next MLS match – Timbers versus Columbus Crew?

Hopefully the Timbers high from today's out-and-out romping of the Rapids will keep them going through Wednesday’s USOC match and on to the match at the Crew Stadium. The Crew are hungry to get back into the top 5 for the East, so I have no doubt they'll give our boys some trouble as they fight for three points. With our back line stronger than ever and our attack only getting better I feel that the game will be in our favor and we'll return home with another road win.

What else should we know about your Timbers fandom? Any Favorite pieces of Timbers memorabilia?

I love my family in 105, they make every match day an experience regardless of the outcome, they make cheering for our boys way more fun than it already is.

My favorite piece of memorabilia would have to be my highly coveted 1 of 300 fan made Tetris scarf, it has and will probably always be my go to game day scarf whether at home or away. If I had to choose a team made favorite it would probably be my custom red, white, green and keeper kits with my favorite number printed on each, 83.

The Axe experience was absolutely enthralling, other than feeling extremely ridiculous waving and smiling for over 60 seconds I wouldn't change a thing. My girlfriend and I had a complete blast and enjoyed every minute of the day due to the very welcoming and extremely helpful staff.

Our thanks to Brandon and Brynn for being our guests and for their fantastic support!

Taylor Twellman. The very name evokes images of MLS Legend and flair as a 5-time MLS All-Star and 2005 MLS MVP who scored a whopping 101 goals in 174 matches for the New England Revolution.

Since retired, Twellman has become one of the top analysts for ESPN soccer broadcasts alongside Adrian Healeyyou heard him this past weekend on the Timbers-FC Dallas match—as well as the equally opinionated Big Head to Alexi Lalas’ Red Head on the aptly named ESPN Big Head Red Head Podcast.

But Twellman has also become a leading spokesperson around increased awareness of and improved care around traumatic brain injuries through his foundation Think Taylor. During the course his time as a player, Twellman suffered a series of concussions that curtailed his soccer career. Think Taylor looks to help tell his story and provide a support system for athletes across all sports and ages who suffer concussions and their after effects.

I sat down with Twellman this past weekend to talk about his thoughts on the recent run of U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup Qualifiers that he has been covering for ESPN, how he thinks Jurgen Klinsmann will utilize this summer’s Gold Cup tournament in furthering development around the U.S. team and how the Think Taylor Foundation is changing people’s perceptions around concussions. We also discuss the three biggest stories in MLS so far (Spoiler: The Timbers are one of them) and renew the age old debate: Big Head vs. Red Head.

Be sure to tune in to tonight’s U.S. – Honduras match at 6pm on ESPN and don’t forget to get tickets for the USMNT when they come to JELD-WEN Field for the Gold Cup on July 9.

The Backcut Podcast sits at the intersection of Timbers, Thorns, soccer & culture to explore the unique elements of the beautiful game. You can subscribe to The Backcut on iTunes in the same feed as the Talk Timbers podcast.

Halfway through the Hexagonal, the United States men’s national team is in control of the table, taking 10 points from five games. Tonight, The Yanks face Honduras at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah. This matchup comes on the heels of the USA’s 2-0 win over Panama at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington.

The USMNT win over Panama was not only an exciting, well-played match by the Stars and Stripes; it was a spectacular display by the American Outlaws and Pacific Northwest soccer fans. United States coach Jürgen Klinsmann and his players admired the crowd, and spoke to the level of excellence demonstrated by Northwest fans.

Check out KICKTV’s video recap of the game, and tune in at 6 p.m. PT tonight on ESPN to see the United States vs. Honduras.

Don't forget to get tickets to this summer's Gold Cup tournament at JELD-WEN Field when the USMNT take on Belize on July 9.

As part of our inaugural group of ticket holders, Lori and Sean won the chance to have a VIP experience for the Portland Timbers vs. FC Dallas match on June 15th, including KeyBank Club seats, and a chance to visit with Timber Joey on the field!

We asked Lori a few questions after the match:

What was your first memory of supporting the Timbers?
We saw the first Timbers game at the University of Portland field (before JELD-WEN was ready).  During that match, we kept thinking how totally awesome the Timbers Army was, and we were struck by the speed and agility of number 11.  Everybody around us started pulling out their roster sheets trying to figure out who 11 was, and we all tried to say his name resulting in various butchered pronunciations of Alhassan's name all around us.  He still is amazing to watch, but seeing him for the first time and that close up was definitely something special. A close second for favorite memories was the Timbers' shut out of the LA Galaxy that year.

What was your favorite moment of this match?
The easy answer would be Nagbe's goal, but the most exciting moment was actually when the Timber's had two back-to-back shots on goal that were blocked.  Even though it did not result in a goal, it was really fun to watch.

Who would you nominate as Player of the Match?
That is really difficult!  Ricketts got another clean sheet and had some awesome saves.  Nagbe, again, placed the ball in the net with perfect precision.  Chara disrupted and charged like the champion and solid all-around player he is.  Will Johnson never stopped in spite of constant muggings mid-field.  Alhassan tirelessly advanced the ball and avoided defenders.  So, man-of-the match is Porter.  Somehow he manages to try new combinations that are the perfect match-ups against for each team the Timbers play.  He is a genius.

What is your prediction for the next match – Timbers versus LA Galaxy?
The Timbers will control the ball (60% + possession) and wear down the Galaxy, resulting in a win for the Timbers.  Goal differential of 2.

What else should we know about your Timbers fandom?
We are on the big picture of original season ticket holders out of sheer luck.  We went to the downtown Timbers store on a rainy day before the first season started just because we wanted to buy Timbers jerseys.  It turns out, they were doing the pictures with the axes and chainsaw and such for that original mural.  It is my favorite family pic and probably always will be.  Yeah, that was almost as lucky as being fans of the match.  It was great to sit in the fancy seats and get fed a bunch.  However, we will happily return to section 209 to stand, drink, cheer, and cuss through the whole match, like the true fans we are. RCTID!

There’s no doubt about your true fandom, Lori! Thank you for your wonderful support!

June 6, 2013 vs. FC Kansas City

Hannah Wilker is a 6th grader in the Access Academy Alternative Program.

What makes your strong, smart and bold?
I am strong because I am good with my friends and I am very confident. I like to help others achieve their goals. I am smart because I study a lot and I have motivation – well, sometimes I procrastinate, but everyone has their moments. And in general, I am good with people which can make you smart. I can be bold a lot. I like to challenge what others think if I don’t not think it is correct. And I will admit when I am not correct about what I am thinking but I definitely like to challenge common ideas.

Tell us about today:
I was at the season’s opening day match which was great. But today’s game was more high energy and a more goals were scored. It definitely had a different kind of energy.

Favorite part about today:
My favorite part about today was definitely the game. I really liked Alex’s goals – they were very pretty and superb. And the Rose Ceremony. I was so nervous! They are amazing soccer players – they are world class and I aspire to be like them. They are my role models.
