Gastón Fernández is an experienced veteran having spent his career in the top flights in Argentina and Mexico. He started his professional career in 2002 with famed Argentine side River Plate and has gone on to make 275 appearances and score 67 goals in league play. Fernández has competed in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana on multiple occasions and helped lead Argentina’s Estudiantes de la Plata to the 2009 Copa Libertadores championship.

2014: Started, played 90 minutes and tallied the game-tying goal in the 33rd minute of a 1-1 draw at Houston April 27, his third goal of the season ... Played 29 minutes as a second-half sub April 19 against Real Salt Lake ... Logged 28 minutes as a sub April 12 in a 1-1 draw against Chivas USA ... Started in each of the club's first four regular-season matches ... Became the first Timbers MLS player to score in each of his first two MLS matches ... Notched the equalizer in the 79th minute of a 1-1 draw against Chicago on March 16 ... Made his MLS debut, scoring the equalizer four minutes into second-half stoppage time of a 1-1 draw March 8 against Philadelphia ... Became the fifth Timbers MLS player to score a goal in his MLS debut.

2013-14: Made one appearance for Estudiantes de la Plata of Argentina’s first division, entering as a halftime sub Dec. 8, 2013 in a loss to Tigre, before signing with the Timbers.

2012-13: Played in 23 league games (18 starts) in his fifth season with Estudiantes.

2011-12: Recorded a second straight 10-goal season with Estudiantes … Tallied 10 goals over a career-high 34 appearances … Recorded a two-goal performance in a 3-0 win over Atletico Rafaela on Oct. 16, 2011 … Notched three goals over the final five matches of the Clausura season, contributing to wins over Banfield (May 19, 2012) and Newell’s Old Boys (June 10, 2012) … Competed in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana.

2010-11: Was one of the leading goal-scorers for Estudiantes, finishing the season with 10 goals in 25 league appearances … Was one of the top goal-scorers in Argentina’s Primera División, recording a team-best six goals for Estudiantes during the Apertura tournament as the club won the season title with a first-place finish and a record of 14-2-3 (45pts) … Played in five matches during the 2011 Copa Libertadores as Estudiantes reached the Round of 16 … Competed in the 2010 Copa Sudamericana.

2009-10: Split the campaign between Mexico’s Tigres U.A.N.L. and Estudiantes … Started the season in Mexico’s first division with Tigres, notching six goals in 13 league games … Helped Tigres capture the 2009 SuperLiga title, starting in the final against the Chicago Fire … Returned to Argentina signing with Estudiantes … Compiled two goals over 10 league games in Argentina’s first division … Aided in Estudiantes’ run to the quarterfinal of the 2010 Copa Libertadores, scoring the game-winning goal in the group stage March 23, 2010, against Juan Aurich.

2008-09: Spent the season on loan with Estudiantes from Mexico’s Tigres … Was a regular starter for Estudiantes, featuring in 23 of his 26 league appearances and scoring three goals … Helped the club reach the finals of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana … Tallied three goals to help Estudiantes to the 2009 Copa Libertadores championship … Recorded the game-winning goal in the first minute of a win over Libertad of Paraguay in the Round of 16 and then delivered the equalizer in a 2-1 win over Brazil’s Cruzeiro in Leg 2 of the final.

2007-08: Began the campaign with Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro in Argentina’s Primera División, scoring one goal in 13 league appearances before being transferred to Mexico’s Tigres U.A.N.L. on Dec., 18, 2007 … Scored in his club debut for Tigres providing the equalizer in the final minutes of a 1-1 draw with Chiapas FC on Jan. 19, 2008 … It was the first of five goals in 10 league appearances in Mexico’s first division over the Clausura tournament.

2006-07: Started the season on loan with Monterrey in Mexico’s top flight from Argentine club River Plate … Tallied six goals in 15 league appearances for Monterrey, helping the club to a first-place finish in its group during the 2006 Apertura season … Was signed by Argentina’s San Lorenzo ahead of the Primera División’s Clausura season … Tallied nine goals in 17 league games (14 starts) for San Lorenzo, helping the club to a first-place finish (14-2-3, 45pts) and the Clausura title as its leading goal-scorer.

2005-06: Played in 16 league games for River Plate, scoring one goal, before joining Mexican club Monterrey on loan … Saw time in 13 games (5 starts) for Monterrey in Mexico’s first division and scored a pair of goals.

2004-05: Returned to River Plate, where he started his professional career, and became a starter for the club, featuring in 26 of his 28 league appearances … Scored five goals in league play … A member of the River Plate squad that reached the semifinal of the 2005 Copa Libertadores.

2003-04: Played one season with Argentine first-division side Racing Club, starting 18 of his 24 league appearances … He scored a total of seven goals for the club in league play.

2002-03: Made his professional debut with River Plate after coming up through the club’s academy … Made six league appearances, starting one match, as River Plate won the 2002-03 Clausura season title with a record of 13-2-4 (43pts).
