Focus on Youth Activity
The Portland Timbers are a presenting partner of Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest's Sports Buddies program, which is a one-to-one mentoring program for at-risk youth with an emphasis on sports. By participating in their programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are more confident in their schoolwork performance, able to get along better with their families and less likely to be involved in illegal activity. AC Portland supplies the tools to empower students to lead healthy lives, succeed academically, and inspire positive community engagement. Their vision is to transform communities and serve hundreds of local students through youth soccer and afterschool programming. The Timbers partnered with Playworks to improve the health and well-being of children through safe, meaningful play. They create a place FOR EVERY KID on the playground – where every kid belongs, has fun and is part of the game. Teachers, staff, and principals say that having Playworks at their school has lasting results: 94% reported in increase in students' abilities to focus in class after recess and 98% reported an improvement in overall school climate. Special Olympics Oregon (SOOR) serves 12,000 participants throughout the state. Still growing, Special Olympics Oregon is efficiently expanding programs to get closer to serving every individual with intellectual disabilities that qualifies to participate in Special Olympics. The Timbers have supported the Cascadia Challenge Unified Soccer exchange and hosted the 2014 Fall State Games at Providence Park. Learn more about Special Olympics Oregon.
