Goalkeeping Coach - Mike Toshack
Prior to joining Portland, Toshack was a member of the coaching staffs in Houston (2007- 08) and Toronto FC (2009-11). Under his guidance, Toshack’s goalkeepers have regularly ranked among MLS’s top performers each season. In 2013, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts received the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and was named to the MLS Best XI. In Houston, former goalkeeper Pat Onstad recorded the league’s best goals-against average in 2007. During Toshack’s time at Toronto FC, goalkeeper Stefan Frei was a finalist for the 2009 MLS Rookie of the Year and finished among leaders in saves in 2010 and 2011.
Before working in MLS, the Prescott, Ontario, native was the director of goalkeeping for the Vancouver Whitecaps, then of the USL First Division, from 2005-06. He worked with goalkeepers at all levels of the club and helped coach the first team to the USL-1 title in 2006. Additionally, Toshack served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Impact from 2002-03.
Toshack also served as the goalkeeper coach with the Canada U-20 National Team from 1998-2001. That position took him around the world, including Argentina, where the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Youth Championships took place.
