Timbers host San Jose Earthquakes of MLS with U.S. Open Cup win over Seattle

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers advanced to the fourth round of the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-0 shutout over the Seattle Sounders Tuesday night at PGE Park.

Goals from Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar and Dan Antoniuk ensured that the Timbers will host the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer on Aug. 3 at PGE Park.

Tickets for the event go on sale at 10 a.m. tomorrow, July 13, at area Ticketmaster outlets and at the PGE Park box office.

Alcaraz-Cuellar dialed in the first goal of the match via a direct free kick outside of the 18-yard box in the 15th minute. His right-footed strike curled around the wall to the near post, hitting the sidebar and bouncing in past Seattle’s ‘keeper, Preston Burpo.

The goal was set up by a give-and-go between Brian Winters and Aaran Lines, which left Lines with one defender to beat, but he was promptly taken down and the Timbers were awarded the free kick.

The Timbers collected their second goal after Scot Thompson was fouled inside the box at the 59th minute mark. Antoniuk finished the ensuing penalty kick by slotting it low and inside the left post beyond Burpo.

The Timbers dictated play for much of the match, forcing Burpo to make five saves on 10 shots, including an athletic, diving stop on a header from Antoniuk in the 45th minute.

The Sounders’ best chance in the first half came in the 22nd when Roger Levesque failed to redirect a low cross from Kevin Sakuda inside the near post.

The Sounders were denied by the post twice in the second half.

Ben Somoza’s low drive from just inside the 18-yard box clanked in the 55th while a free kick from former Timber Andrew Gregor suffered the same result in the 66th.

The Timbers’ next league match is this Thursday against the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park. Kickoff is 7 p.m. (Pacific).
