Camp Report: My first game as a professional

The Timbers have moved into the second week of preseason training, but for rookie midfielder Josh Cameron the excitement of playing in his first game as a professional against the Earthquakes still lingers. He talks about that match and and the start of Week 2 in his Camp Report.

Today is game day! We arrived at the airport at 5:45 a.m. for a flight that was supposed to leave around 7:30 a.m. I think, but ended up being delayed a little. We got to San Jose after an easy flight and got situated in the hotel around 11:30 a.m. It was a very nice hotel by the way. I was very impressed. Most of the guys went out and got a quick bite to eat. I went to Subway with a number of the guys, enjoyed a meal and got back to my hotel room where Jason (McLaughlin) and I watched some basketball; its March Madness time for basketball you know.
While watching some games, I ended up falling asleep for a couple hours. It felt great to get some sleep after waking up pretty early. After my nap we had a team meal at the hotel with some chicken, spaghetti, salad, and fruit. After the meal we were able to go back to our rooms and relax a little before we left for the game.
We got to the stadium, walked the field and went to the locker room to get ready. I was starting to get pretty pumped but nervous at the same time. My first game as a professional, against a Major League Soccer team, in front of the most people I’ve ever played in front of gave me good reason to be a little nervous I’d say. We went out and warmed up before reporting back to the locker room for pre-game. After that we went out, the national anthem was played and the players were introduced. We took the field. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
We played a tough game … ended up losing 1-0 to a team that has been training since the middle of January. So for that reason, we were fairly pleased with the game we played considering we had only been training as a team for a week. After the game we got back to the hotel and went out to dinner in small groups before heading to bed. Overall it was a pretty good day.
Its’ been a great first week. I’m getting to know the guys better and feel more comfortable out on the field.

Week # 2 started today. We started the day off with a warm up and got into some technical work before getting into a possession game to end the practice. Today we had three more guys show up for camp. It was great to get a few more people in here to start getting to know them.
The afternoon started with a warm up before getting right into some small sided games. It was a pretty fun afternoon. We played the entire time, got a cool down and called it a day. Unfortunately the day was not quite over for me as I had to go right from practice to a final exam. I am trying to finish my winter term of classes at Oregon State from Portland. It’s pretty stressful but in the long run I will be happy with the decision to stay in those classes and finish the term instead of dropping them.
