Timbers face Red Bulls in preseason match Friday
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers continue their series of preseason exhibitions Friday when they play host to the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer at the University of Portland’s Clive Charles Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through the UP and PGE Park box offices, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1 (800) 745-3000.
Friday’s match against the Red Bulls marks the Timbers’ second MLS opponent on their preseason exhibition schedule. The Timbers concluded their first week of preseason on March 14, with an exhibition match on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Portland and the Red Bulls meet for the first time on Friday; the Timbers are 3-5-0 all-time against MLS clubs.
The Red Bulls captured the MLS Western Conference championship and reached the MLS Cup in 2008. They have 15 players from last season’s team returning for the 2009 campaign, including several of the top players in MLS as well as former Timbers defender Kevin Goldthwaite. The Red Bulls open their 2009 MLS regular-season schedule Thursday against Seattle Sounders FC in Seattle, Wash.
Portland had four players report for preseason training camp this week – midfielders Ryan Pore, Brian Farber and Johan Claesson and forward Antouman Jallow. All four players are available for Friday’s match.
The Timbers open their ninth USL First Division campaign April 25 on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
