Timbers acquire Alex Nimo on loan from Salt Lake

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer have agreed in principle to a loan agreement that will see midfielder Alex Nimo join the Timbers on loan for a second season in 2010, it was announced today. The transaction is pending USSF approval.

As part of the agreement, Real Sal Lake has the ability to recall Nimo should his services be needed by the MLS club during the season. He has joined the Timbers in training camp and will be available for selection for tonight’s preseason match against Seattle Sounders FC.

The Portland native played in 23 games for the Timbers while on loan from Salt Lake in 2009. He recorded two goals and one assist and was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week in Week 18.

Nimo, 19, was selected 17th overall by Real Salt Lake in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and totaled four assists in 10 MLS Reserve Division matches during his rookie season.

He has represented the United States at the U-17 and U-20 levels, scoring eight goals in 22 international matches. With the U-17 squad, Nimo was enrolled at the Residency program in Bradenton, Fla., and helped the team qualify for the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea.

Born in Liberia, Nimo and his family lived in a refugee camp in Ghana before they were granted asylum and moved to Portland, Ore., in 1999 when he was nine years old. He starred at Benson High School and earned Portland Interscholastic League MVP honors and was named a Parade High School All-American in 2006. Nimo joined the U.S. U-17 Residency program upon receiving U.S. citizenship in 2006.

Following tonight’s preseason match against Sounders FC in Seattle, the Timbers continue their preseason schedule Saturday, March 20, against the San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara, Calif.
