Go A-to-Z with defender Ian Joy

In his first season with the Timbers, defender Ian Joy has helped anchor one of the best backlines in the league. A player who has traveled the world playing the game at the highest levels, get to know the Timbers captain in a special A-to-Z.

A: Alter-ego – What is a superpower you wish you had?
Invisible powers; so I can sneak into the movie theatre for free.

B: Band – If you were in a rock band, which instrument would you play?
Drums. So I could smack them and burn some energy.

C: Couch potato – What is one TV show you watch every week?
The King of Queens. It’s been a favorite of mine for years.

D: Devious – What was your favorite prank to pull or one that was pulled on you?
I once covered my coach at St Pauli's car with branches and leaves. I was covered so much that his car was hidden.

E: Earplugs – What was the last concert you went to?
Metallica. It was the loudest concert I have ever been too.

F: Fame – If you could have a star on Hollywood’s Walk-of-Fame, who would you want yours next to?
Paul McCartney - hero of mine.

G: Goof – What’s your most embarrassing moment on the field?
I was knocked unconscious after getting hit on the back of the head with the ball during the warm up.

 
H: Humble – What’s one thing you aren’t very good at?
Basketball. I'm ashamed to say that my girlfriend, Nichole, beat me at it last time.

I: Inspiration – Who did you look up to growing up?
My dad. He was always a hard working, funny character and I grew up wanting to be like him.

J: Job – What would you do if you weren’t playing soccer?
A golfer. I would have pushed myself to be better at golf, but I had too much energy, so I turned to soccer.

K: Keys – Growing up, what was your dream car? Would you own it today?
Ferrari - only if I was a millionaire.

L: Log Slab – What do you do think you’ll do with your first log slab as a member of the Timbers?

M: Music – What is your favorite song on your iPod/MP3 player right now?
Just the way you are - Bruno Mars. It’s a feel good song.

N: Nickname – Do you have a nickname, or is there something your teammates call you?
“Killer” – I was given that nickname in Germany for my aggressive style.

O: OH! – What scares you the most?
Paranormal activities. After seeing a Ouija Board in action I was scared.

P: Pizza – What toppings are necessities?
Pepperoni or ham and pineapple do the trick for me.

Q: Quiet – What do you like to do to unwind?
Skype with my daughter, Madison, always puts a smile on my face when I'm tired or down.

R: Read – What was the last book you read?
“Cocky: The Rise and Fall of Curtis Warren, Britain's Biggest Drugs Baron” - A story about England's biggest drug dealer Curtis Warren; good read.

S: Superstition – Do you have any pre-game rituals or game-day routines?
Too many to mention and I like to keep them to myself.

T: Town – How would you best describe your hometown?
Bo'ness in Scotland was very rough and still is. You had to be strong to survive, but I loved every minute of it and always love going home to see all my friends.

U: Untouchable – What do you consider the most valuable in your life?
My daughter, Madison, is the most valuable thing in my life of whom I am so protective over.

V: Visitor – What’s your favorite city you’ve played in on the road during your career?
Bratislava, Slovakia - A beautiful city and great culture.

W: World – What’s the farthest you’ve traveled around the world?
San Diego to Edinburgh was a long journey – 6,000 miles.

X: X-ray – Have you broken any bones or had any serious injuries?
I broke my wrist in training after having my leg pulled back by my teammate and landing on my arm.

Y: Yellow Card – What is one life lesson you learned through soccer?
To have no fear and enjoy every minute of it because it’s over before you know it. The clock is ticking as you read this …
