Darlington Nagbe’s brilliant top-corner volley wasn’t able to help Portland beat Sporting Kansas City, but his first career goal easily took home top honors as the AT&T Goal of the Week for Week 16.

The rookie out of the University of Akron showed why he was worthy of the Timbers’ first-round draft pick, and the second overall pick in the 2011 MLS Superdraft.

After Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen punched out a cross, Nagbe found himself alone on the right side of the box, juggled twice, and sent a bullet through traffic that found its way into the upper 90.

Nagbe’s wonder-strike is sure to be a contender for Goal of the Year and wrapped up 54 percent of this week’s voting. He beat out second-place finisher Fabián Espíndola by a comfortable margin, whose clinical equalizer against New England earned RSL a point at home.
