PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Timbers U-23s today announced the addition of four more players to their roster for the 2012 Premier Development League (PDL) season, signing goalkeeper Justin Baarts, midfielders Ricardo Carrillo and Joey De Mare, and defender Anthony Hobbs.

Hobbs, a New Zealand youth international at the U-17 and U-20 levels, and Baarts, from Surrey, B.C., will be added to the Timbers U-23s roster pending the receipt of their International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Hobbs (Auckland, New Zealand) brings international experience to the Timbers U-23s roster, having competed in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup and 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup with New Zealand youth national teams. He played alongside Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson with the New Zealand U-17 National Team at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Hobbs, 21, plays collegiately at Florida International University, where he completed his junior season in 2011. A three-time All-Conference USA selection, he has been named a Panthers team MVP following each of his three collegiate seasons, including Defensive MVP honors in 2010 and 2011. Hobbs has started all 49 of his appearances at FIU.

Baarts (Surrey, B.C.) established himself as the starting goalkeeper for the University of Portland in 2011, starting all 20 games during the season and recording 11 wins and three shutouts. He made his collegiate debut during the Pilots’ 2009 NCAA tournament run, in which the team reached the third round. Baarts, 21, competed on British Columbia provincial teams at the U-13 to U-16 levels and was a member of the Canadian U-15 National Team player pool in 2006.

Carrillo (Prineville, Ore.) has played two seasons for the Timbers U-23s (2010-11) and was a member of the PDL championship-winning team in 2010. In total, he has appeared in 12 games and registered an assist for the Timbers U-23s. At the University of Portland, Carrillo, 21, played in 15 matches and scored five goals during his junior season in 2011. He finished the season as the Pilots’ third leading scorer with 12 points. Overall, he has played in 57 games and recorded six goals and six assists through his first three collegiate seasons, and was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman team in 2009. In addition to playing on the Oregon ODP and Region IV ODP teams as a youth, Carrillo also helped club team Eastside Timbers – a member of the adidas Timbers Alliance – win the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship in 2010.

De Mare (Chapin, S.C.) finished his sophomore season at the College of Charleston with a goal and three assists in 18 games in 2011. He played in 16 games for the Cougars in 2010. De Mare, 19, played the 2011 PDL season with Mississippi Brilla FC, helping the club capture the Southeast Division title and reach the Southern Conference finals. He recorded five goals and two assists in 14 games for Brilla last season. De Mare was a three-year member of the Region III ODP team and was a three-time captain of South Carolina’s ODP squad during his youth career.

Additionally, the Timbers U-23s announced that forward Thomas Spragg sustained a knee injury in a recent spring game for the University of Washington and will miss the 2012 PDL season. With today’s announcements, the Timbers U-23s currently have 17 players on their 2012 roster.

The Timbers U-23s open the 2012 PDL regular season on Friday, May 11, when they play host to the Fraser Valley Mariners FC at JELD-WEN Field; kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
