Timbers Reserves host Whitecaps Reserves in Western Conference matchup
The Portland Timbers Reserves match up against the Vancouver whitecaps FC Reserves in MLS Reserve League play Sunday at JELD-WEN Field with kickoff at 2 p.m. (Pacific).
Sunday’s match is the first of a doubleheader at JELD-WEN Field, as Portland Thorns FC play host to FC Kansas City in a nationally televised NWSL match at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific). The Timbers Reserves (4-2-2, 14pts.) are currently second in the West Division behind the first-place LA Galaxy Reserves. The Timbers Reserves return to JELD-WEN Field looking to get another win after a 1-0 road victory against the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves on July 28 at the Earthquakes Training Facility. Forward Jose Valencia snapped the Earthquakes Reserves' three-match winning streak with a goal early in the second half, his fourth of the MLS Reserve League season.
Sunday's match between the Timbers Reserves and Whitecaps FC Reserves marks the second and final time the teams will meet during the 2013 MLS Reserve League season. The first game, played on May 19 at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, B.C., resulted in a 1-1 draw with the tying goal scored by midfielder Sal Zizzo in the 82nd minute off a free kick. The rivalry match proved to be a physical one, with 22 combined fouls committed throughout the game.
In their last match, the Whitecaps FC Reserves fell 2-1 to the Richmond Kickers of USL PRO on July 23 at Thunderbird Stadium. Sitting in third place in the West Division with an overall record of 3-2-3 (12pts), the Whitecaps FC Reserves look to end their two-game losing streak.
