NWSL MATCH RECAP | Portland Thorns FC 0, Western New York Flash 5
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC were unable to overcome multiple first-half goals by the Western New York Flash while playing with 10 players for the final 63 minutes of the match in a 5-0 loss on Saturday night in front of 13, 838 fans at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.
Western New York (4-5-2, 14pts) got a goal in the 11th minute from midfielder McCall Zerboni, scoring with a nifty back heel off a Flash corner kick as midfielder Carli Lloyd’s header near the penalty spot found Zerboni on the left post.
Thorns FC goalkeeper Nadine Angerer was sent off just 17 minutes later after being shown a straight red card for taking down a Western New York player in the box, reducing Portland to 10 players for the rest of the match. Michelle Betos stepped in to face the penalty kick, replacing Angerer, and Lloyd stepped up and placed her spot kick high and inside the left post to put the Flash in front, 2-0.
Forward Samantha Kerr and Lloyd both recorded a brace in the game. Kerr scored a pair of goals in the 32nd and 47th minutes. Lloyd added her second goal of the match in the 51st minute. Kerr registered the assist for her fifth point of the match.
Thorns FC (4-5-2, 14pts) outshot Western New York, 10-9, in the second half as forward Alex Morgan equaled a game high with seven shots, including two chances late in the match. Morgan’s shot skipped just wide of the goal after she settled a bouncing ball in the box in the 61st minute, hitting it first time with her left foot. In the 76th minute, Morgan beat two defenders to a ball played over the top hitting a hard shot from inside the box that was tipped out for a corner kick by Western New York goalkeeper Lydia Williams.
Portland will play host to the Washington Spirit for the first time this season on Sunday, June 15, at Providence Park; kickoff is set 7 p.m. (Pacific). The match will be broadcast live via high-definition webstream at www.portlandthornsfc.com.
