Following three seasons with the Portland Timbers U-23s and a standout collegiate career at the University of Washington, Richards signed as the club’s first Homegrown Player on Jan. 4, 2012. Richards registered 26 goals and 12 assists in 37 games with the Timbers U-23s, becoming the team’s all-time leading scorer. He became the third player from the Timbers U-23s, who compete in United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League, to sign with the Timbers’ first team.
2013: MIssed the 2013 season due to an ACL injury; underwent successful surgery to repair his ACL on Feb. 4, 2013.
2012: Appeared in six games in his rookie MLS season, starting two, while logging 201 minutes played ... Named the club’s 2012 Young Player of the Year ... Made his MLS debut on July 14, playing 45 minutes as a halftime sub against the LA Galaxy ... Handed his first MLS start against Chivas USA on July 28, recording four shots (one on goal) in 74 minutes of action, a performance that earned him MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week honorable mention for Week 21... Started and played 69 minutes of an exhibition vs. Aston Villa FC on July 24 ... Played 22 minutes as a sub against Spanish club Valencia CF on May 23 ... Came on as a 65th-minute sub in a U.S. Open Cup loss to Cal
FC on May 30 ... Was the second-leading scorer for the Timbers Reserves with four goals in nine games (eight starts) ... Scored his fourth MLS Reserve League goal, the game-winner, in the Timbers Reserves’ Sept. 16 win over Seattle Sounders FC Reserves ... Scored his first goal of the MLS Reserve League season in a win over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves April 22.
2011: Recorded a standout season for the Timbers U-23s and was named the club’s 2011 Timbers U-23s Player of the Year … Led the team in scoring for a second straight season, finishing with 22 points in 14 matches … Logged a team-high six assists and shared the team lead in goals with eight … Was named the PDL Player of the Week in Week 3, scoring a hat trick in a 6-0 road victory over the Washington Crossfire on May 15 … Recorded a goal or an assist in each of the final seven matches of the regular season … At season’s end was selected to the PDL All-Western Conference Team.
2010: Assembled an impressive second season with the Timbers U-23s in 2010, and led the team to its first PDL championship … Was instrumental in the Timbers U-23s becoming the league’s first undefeated champion, posting a perfect 20-0-0 record during the campaign … In 12 regular-season matches, scored a team-high 14 goals for the Timbers U-23s, ranking second among league leaders in goals scored … Following the regular season was named to the PDL All-League team, the PDL All-Western Conference Team, the league’s MVP and Rookie of the Year … Started all four playoff matches and scored two goals in the PDL finals and was named the 2010 PDL Championship finals MVP … Also contributed two assists during the season.
2009: Was a member of the inaugural Timbers U-23s roster … Was the team’s second-leading scorer with four goals and four assists … Played in 11 of the team’s 16 regular-season games.
COLLEGE: Was consistently one of the Pac-10/Pac-12 Conference’s top scorers during his collegiate career at the University of Washington … Compiled 31 goals and 15 assists in 72 games for the Huskies, leading the team in scoring, goals and game-winning goals in each of his four seasons … Ranks among the school’s career leaders in both goals and points (77) … Was a four-time, all-conference honoree, including first-team nods as a junior (2010) and senior (2011) … As one of three captains in 2011, led the Huskies to a second-place finish in the Pac-12 and received a national ranking during the season … Left Washington as one of the most decorated student-athletes in men’s soccer, both on and off the field … Following his senior season (2011), was a first-team Capital One Academic All-American, selected as the 2011 Pac-12 Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and named to the All-West Region first team among his several postseason awards … Listed No. 11 in Top 100 upperclassmen and No. 56 in Top 100 Pro Prospects in 2011 by TopDrawerSoccer.com … Selected as a preseason candidate for the 2011 LOWE’s Senior CLASS award … Voted the Huskies’ Offensive MVP for 2010 following his junior campaign … 2010 accolades included a spot on the Pac-10 All-Academic first team and NSCAA All-Far West Region second team as well as third-team ESPN Academic All-America honors … Led the Pac-10 in shots in each of his first two collegiate seasons.
PERSONAL: As a youth, played club soccer for Eastside United FC, a Timbers-affiliated club in Gresham, Ore., and was a member of the Oregon ODP program … Attended Camas High School, where he won two state championships (2006, 2008) and was named Washington’s Gatorade Player of the Year following his senior prep season in 2008 … Became the third Timbers U-23s player to sign with the Timbers’ first team, joining midfielder Freddie Braun and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson … All three players were part of the Timbers U-23s championship-winning team in 2010.
