Timbers sign former L.A. Galaxy forward Mamba Chisoni

PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers today signed forward Mubarike “Mamba” Chisoni to a two-year contract.

Chisoni, 24, joins the Timbers from the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS, where he spent the 2005 season. He made 11 appearances and one start for the first team and was also a prolific goal-scorer at the reserve level. Chisoni, originally from Zimbabwe, finished tied for fourth in the Reserve League and first among Galaxy players with five goals. He also was the only Galaxy player to appear and start in 11 reserve contests.

“Mamba could fit in as an attacking midfielder or a striker, but he’s very dynamic and explosive up front,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “His experience in MLS and the fact that he got significant playing time with the reserves will be a huge benefit to this team.”

Prior to joining the Galaxy, Chisoni was a standout attacking midfielder at Coastal Carolina University, where he was a first-team All-Big South Conference selection for three consecutive years (2002-04). He also was named a third-team All-American following his junior season. Chisoni scored 27 goals and tallied 24 assists in his three seasons with the Chanticleers.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Timbers,” said Chisoni, who is originally from Zimbabwe. “I’ve played in Portland before, and the games have a great atmosphere - every bit as good as the MLS games I’m used to.”

The announcement brings the Timbers’ list of signed players to 16.
