Timbers re-sign forward Byron Alvarez

PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Portland Timbers today announced that forward Byron Alvarez will return to the team for a fourth season.

Alvarez, 27, is the franchise’s career leader in points (81), goals (37) and shots (188), tied for sixth in games (72) and assists (7) and eighth in minutes (5,062). A three-time member of the United Soccer Leagues First Division Team of the Week in 2005, Alvarez tallied nine goals and two assists in his third season with the Timbers.

“Byron is a great person to work with and I look forward to coaching him this season,” said Chris Agnello, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “On the field, he provides a very serious scoring threat every time he touches the ball.”

Prior to joining the Timbers, Alvarez spent time playing for Mexican teams La Piedad and Astros before joining the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer in 2002, where he made eight appearances for the first team.

“I am so happy to be returning to Portland,” said Alvarez, who played for Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League during the off-season. “With the ideas that coach (Chris) Agnello has, this team is going to have a great season.”

The announcement brings the Timbers’ list of signed players to 18.

The Timbers open the home portion of their season by playing host to the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park on Friday, May 5. A variety of season ticket options are available by calling the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5555. For detailed ticket information, go to www.portlandtimbers.com.
