Timbers to host AC Milan U-21s June 19 at PGE Park

PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers announced today they will play AC Milan Primavera, the U-21 team of Italian superpower AC Milan, on June 19 at PGE Park, presented by Peroni Italy. AC Milan’s U-21 squad will visit Portland on its three-game preseason tour of the United States.




Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.




Tickets for AC Milan Primavera go on sale Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m. Starting at $17, tickets are available through the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (503) 224-4400.

, head coach and general manager of the Timbers. “The Primavera team is good enough to play anyone in the world. They have some youth national team members, and we’ve been told a few first-team players will be making the trip as well.”




AC Milan Primavera is one of 53 teams that compete in the Campionato Primavera league, a combination of youth squads from the Italian Serie A, B and C leagues. AC Milan Primavera is currently ranked second in its group with a record of 15-2-6 (53pts); the top four teams from each group advance to the postseason.




The Primavera squad features 10 players who have seen action with AC Milan’s senior team during the 2006-07 season. Defender

, who has played for the U-18 Italian National Team, along with defender

, and midfielders
Matteo Lunati
and captain
Gastone Bottini
all played for AC Milan in the early rounds of the Italian Cup.

each saw the field with AC Milan’s first team in Serie A matches midway through the season.




During its trip to the United States, AC Milan Primavera will also play the Minnesota Thunder of the USL First Division on June 23.

With AC Milan Primavera, the Timbers have two international exhibition matches scheduled for the 2007 season. On May 9, the Timbers battle Club Necaxa of Mexico’s Primera Division at PGE Park at 7 p.m.




The Timbers begin the 2007 USL First Division season on Saturday, April 21, at 7 p.m. against the Puerto Rico Islanders at PGE Park.
