PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers were 5-1-1 in league matches during the month of July and also recorded a 2-1 win over England’s Preston North End in a special exhibition match at PGE Park. Five players are up for the Timbers’ July Man of the Month that helped the Timbers climb into first place in the USL First Division.
Fans have until Friday to vote for July's Man of the Month by voting in the team's fan poll at www.portlandtimbers.com.
Forwards David Hague and Chris Bagley, defenders Cameron Knowles and Leonard Griffin, and midfielder Tom Poltl are all up for July’s Man of the Month honor.
Hague recorded three goals and an assist in the month of July and earned Player of the Week honors in Week 13. Hague tallied the first hat trick of the season in a 4-1 win over the California Victory at PGE Park and assisted the game-winning goal in a road win over the Atlanta Silverbacks on July 21.
Bagley captured his first Team of the Week selection in Week 14 after recording a goal and an assist. On July 19, Bagley fed teammate Andrew Gregor for the game-tying goal as the Timbers defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 at PGE Park. Bagley also netted his first goal of the season in a 1-0 road victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks on July 21.
Knowles has played every minute of the 2007 regular-season and recorded two goals in two matches against the California Victory in July. He has been a part of the Timbers defense that has assembled a franchise record 10 shutouts this season.
Griffin played in each match during the month of July and helped the Timbers’ backline record four shutouts. Griffin’s ball into the box on July 19 set up the game-winning goal by Lawrence Olum in a 2-1 win over the Whitecaps.
Poltl returned to the Timbers’ lineup on July 15 after suffering a hip injury in late June. He earned Team of the Week honors in Week 14 with Bagley after recording his first assist of the season against Vancouver.
Previous Timbers’ Man of the Month winners include forward Bryan Jordan (May) and goalkeeper Josh Wicks and his backline (June).
