PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Timbers U-23s travel to Canada for a second consecutive weekend as they face the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency on Sunday at Simon Fraser University at 2 p.m.
The Timbers U-23s (5-2-1, 16pts) have won three of their last four matches and currently sit in third place in the Premier Development League’s Northwest Division. Portland has played four of its last five matches on the road and will face its third consecutive away match Sunday in Vancouver.
Sunday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings this season between the Timbers U-23s and Whitecaps Residency. The parent teams for both clubs have had a long-standing rivalry as members of the USL First Division and North American Soccer League.
The Timbers U-23s added local goalkeeper
Jason Dodson
to their roster on Friday after training with the team during the week. Dodson, 18, recently graduated from Lakeridge High School, where he was a High School All-American honorable mention in 2008. A member of the U.S. U-18 National Team pool in 2008, Dodson will attend Stanford University in the fall on a soccer scholarship.
Portland defender
Daniel Leach
will be unavailable for Sunday’s match against the Whitecaps Residency due to a one-game, league-imposed suspension for his red card on June 6 in a loss to the Kitsap Pumas. Midfielder
Collen Warner
has joined the team this week and will be available for selection on Sunday.
The Timbers U-23s return home on Sunday, June 21 to play host to the Tacoma Tide at Lincoln Park Stadium in Forest Grove, Ore., at 3 p.m. Gates open at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.
ABOUT VANCOUVER WHITECAPS RESIDENCY
The Whitecaps Residency (1-1-2, 5pts) concludes a six-game homestand this weekend with back-to-back matches against the Spokane Spiders on Saturday and the Timbers U-23s on Sunday. Recently, the Whitecaps Residency completed a two-week trip to Germany by participating in the INSEL-CUP junior international tournament. Vancouver faces an eight-game June schedule, including a return trip to Portland on June 28.
