Timbers take on MLS' San Jose Saturday in California

PORTLAND, Ore. –
The Portland Timbers travel to face Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes in a preseason match Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s preseason contest will be broadcast live on 95.5 The Game with broadcaster
John
Strong
calling the action; a half-hour pre-game show begins at 6:30 p.m.

Portland wraps up its third week of preseason training camp with the match against the Earthquakes. The Timbers opened their six-week camp March 1 in preparation of the 2010 USSF Division 2 Pro League season.

The Timbers face an MLS opponent for a second straight week when they take the field against San Jose. Last week, Portland recorded a 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC in a preseason game at Qwest Field. Trialist
O.J. Obatola
scored the game-winning goal and goalkeeper
Steve Cronin
earned the shutout against Seattle to improve Portland’s preseason record to 2-0-0.

Portland and San Jose have met in preseason contests the last two years. In 2008, the Earthquakes earned a 2-1 victory in Portland, and then recorded a 1-0 win at home last year. Since 2001, the Timbers are 1-4-0 all-time against San Jose.

The Earthquakes are 7-1-1 in preseason and have not allowed a goal in their last five games, posting a 4-0-1 record in that span. Saturday’s match marks the Earthquakes’ final preseason test before the start of the MLS regular season.

Following Saturday’s match, the Timbers resume preseason training on Monday and will face the Vancouver Whitecaps in a training game on March 26 in Tukwila, Wash. Portland begins the 2010 campaign Saturday, April 17, as they play host to the Rochester Rhinos at PGE Park at 7 p.m.
