Award-winning community fund awards spring grants

PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund (PBPTCF) announced today that almost $30,000 will be granted to six nonprofit organizations in the greater-Portland area this spring. In partnership with Nike and Spirit Mountain Casino, the PBPTCF Advisory Board selected nonprofits focusing on education, activism with youth and families, childhood obesity and soccer-related projects. Schoolhouse Supplies, ALS, De La Salle North Catholic High School, Bienestar, American Red Cross, and Children’s Cancer Association were the PBPTCF spring grant recipients.

The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund, an advised fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, was established in the summer of 2007 and officially launched in January 2008. The fund has an aggressive goal to distribute more than $100,000 in grants each year to deserving nonprofits in the four-county region surrounding the Portland metro area. As professional sports organizations, the Beavers and Timbers are uniquely positioned to have a positive impact on their surrounding community, and the creation of the PBPTCF is a key component in the effort to maximize outreach initiatives.

The Beavers and Timbers community mission is to make the quality of life better for children and families in the greater-Portland area. The PBPTCF strives to reach this goal through focused giving each year, as well as dedication to strengthening the bond between the two professional teams and their fans through extensive community outreach.

To date, the PBPTCF has donated over $230,000 to more than 45 deserving nonprofits of all sizes in the four-county region. The fund seeks to support organizations that promote one of the following areas of focus: Youth education (specifically the K-12 grade levels); youth team sports and fitness with an emphasis on baseball, softball and soccer-related projects; battling childhood obesity; and environmental awareness and activism with youth and families.

The PBPTCF was among those honored at the Portland Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy Awards Luncheon in October 2009 and won awards in the Small Business category and Innovations in Philanthropy.
