Timbers U-23s Evans, Carrillo win youth national title

PORTLAND, Ore. –
Portland Timbers U-23s midfielders
Steven Evans
and
Ricardo Carrillo
today won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship with local youth club Eastside United FC in Overland Park, Kan., with a 1-0 win over Minnesota’s Shattuck-St. Mary’s in the championship match.

The pair helped Eastside United FC ’91 Liverpool bring a U.S. Youth Soccer national championship back to the state of Oregon for the first time since 1994. To reach the national tournament, the club recently won the 2010 U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV championship in New Mexico.

Evans and Carrillo have also contributed in the Timbers U-23s perfect 16-0-0 regular-season record in United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League in 2010. The Timbers U-23s are the first team in the PDL to record a perfect record – without a loss or draw – since the Jackson Chargers in 1998.

The Timbers have further connections to Eastside United FC. The club was founded by Timbers head coach and general manager
Gavin Wilkinson
in 2001 and Timbers U-23s head coach
Jim Rilatt
also serves as Eastside United FC’s boy’s director.

The Timbers U-23s begin the 2010 PDL playoffs on Saturday, July 31, in the Western Conference finals in Bremerton, Wash. Details regarding opponents and games will be announced Monday.
