The Clean Sheet: A day to remember ... Aug. 21

Rookie goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski checks in with the latest installment of his blog, "The Clean Sheet." On Aug. 21, Matt made his first league start for the Timbers and turned in a solid performance. He talks about that game and more.

Hello Portland!

It certainly has been an interesting last couple of weeks. We have battled ourselves back into the playoff race and are continuing to climb in the league standings every game. Also during this time I have gotten to experience a milestone of my own, my first league start!

Ever since the moment I first found out I was getting the start against Minnesota I have been smiling from ear to ear. It was a moment I have been waiting for a very long time and for it to actually come to a reality was something very special.

Going into the game I definitely had more butterflies in my stomach than usual, but once I stepped onto that field and had all the support of my teammates and coaches it was very easy to settle down and focus on the task at hand.

The first half was a competitive one and was full of action at both ends. I was very pleased to get those touches in the first half because at the goalkeeper position that helps ease you into the game. This also allows you to settle your nerves because you are involved not just mentally but physically early on and gets that adrenaline going right off the bat. We went on to win 1-0 and got a much-deserved win on the road. Once that whistle blew a huge burst of adrenaline was sent throughout my body. It was everything I could have ever imagined and asked for in my first start, a win and a shutout! It was so special celebrating with the team after that final whistle and I thank you all so very much for everything.

What was even more special was my family made the trip up to the game. To have them all there at my first league start and to have gotten such an important result meant the world to me!

Moving forward we have one home game left in PGE Park. As a team, we are very excited and will do everything we can to get a great result for our tremendous fans. You all have stuck with us throughout this season and its time to send you all off with a bang. Lets bring the 2010 Championship to Portland!
