MLS SuperDraft 2011 Announce

PORTLAND, Ore.— The Portland Timbers will participate in the 2011 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, presented by adidas, on Thursday, Jan. 13, in Baltimore, Md., as the club continues to build its roster for its inaugural MLS season in 2011. The Timbers hold the No. 2 overall selection in the draft.

The 2011 SuperDraft will consist of three rounds of 18 picks for a total of 54 player selections:

The first round of the SuperDraft will be televised live on ESPN2, starting at 9 a.m. (Pacific), with subsequent rounds carried online at www.MLSsoccer.com.

In addition to the No. 2 overall pick, the Timbers have two selections in the second round – the 20th and 22nd overall picks. Portland’s third-round selection was traded to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for midfielder Jeremy Hall on Nov. 22, 2010.

To complement the SuperDraft, MLS will hold a Supplemental Draft on Tuesday, Jan. 18, that will also consist of three rounds of 18 picks. Selections that had been traded between clubs as fourth-round SuperDraft selections will now be reflected in the first-round draft order of the Supplemental Draft. The first round of the Supplemental Draft will follow the order of what was to be the fourth round of this year’s SuperDraft.

The awarding of the No. 2 pick in the SuperDraft to the Timbers was determined in the MLS Expansion Priority Draft.

The Timbers open their inaugural MLS season Saturday, March 19, on the road against the defending-MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids. Portland will play host to the Chicago Fire in its home opener Thursday, April 14, at PGE Park.
