The Timbers notched their first victory on Tuesday with a 2-0 U.S. Open Cup play-in win over Chivas USA at the University of Portland. As the squad preps to face the New England Revolution back in MLS regular-season play, can the momentum carry into a first MLS league win? Paul Danzer of The Columbian (Vancouver, Wash.) explains how midfielder Jack Jewsbury had the task of injecting some energy and leadership into Tuesday’s game after coming on as a late substitute. Jewsbury did just that, scoring once and assisting on another goal as the Timbers beat Chivas USA.
