The Timbers may have a weekend off from league action for the first time this season, but the press never stops. In the news this week, a pair of Timbers earned Sports Illustrated Team-of-the-Week honors, captain Jack Jewsbury does a Q & A and we hear more about Brian Umony from Uganda.

Sports Illustratedsoccer writer Steve Davis recaps Week 3 of the MLS season and concludes with his Team of the Week and MLS Power Rankings. A pair of Timbers impressed enough during a 1-1 draw with New England to earn spots as a couple of the week’s best.

Timbers captain Jack Jewsbury reflects on the New England draw, his goal against the Revs, and his assessment of the season so far with Prost Amerika’s New England writer Chris Ballard.

Jewsbury has lived up to the expectations brought by the captain’s armband, writes The Oregonian’s Geoffrey Arnold. The former Kansas City midfielder has produced the “voice that we need in the middle of the field,” said head coach John Spencer.

The Original Winger has some fantastic photos of Real Salt Lake’s trip down to Costa Rica to face Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals. The first set of pictures is of Saprissa’s Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Amyá and the second has a few artsy views of the second-leg semifinal clash that saw RSL through to the CCL finals where it will face Mexico’s Monterrey.

In a preseason interview that just reached the blogosphere this week, Kenny Cooper speaks with Jay Bell of The Shin Guardian about a wide range of topics including facing his old MLS team — FC Dallas — overcoming injuries and being part of the Timbers.

A slow start has not dampened the Timbers’ prospects of growth and confidence as the season moves forward, writes Paul Danzer of The Columbian.

Uganda-based English-language newspaper the Daily Monitor has a story from writer Andrew Mwanguhya in which Ugandan youth coach Eddie Butindo comments on the early career moves of Timbers forward Brian Umony (on loan from University of Pretoria FC in South Africa) and how he believes the loan to Portland will benefit Umony in the long run.

Worried about getting caught in traffic on your way to Timbers home games? Biking could be the key if you’re up for it, says BikePortland.org writer Jonathan Maus. There will be bicycle parking zones on two sides of JELD-WEN Field.
