PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced that tickets for their U.S. Open Cup play-in match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday, May 3, at JELD-WEN Field are now on sale.

Starting at $8, tickets for 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifier against San Jose are available for purchase at the JELD-WEN Field box office, area Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phoning (800) 745-3000.

The Timbers and Earthquakes square off in the second round of Major League Soccer play-in matches. Through a series of single-elimination qualifiers, the Timbers are competing for one of two remaining spots in MLS’s eight-team field in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup tournament.

In a first-round play-in match, the Timbers defeated Chivas USA 2-0 on March 29, advancing to the second round to meet the Earthquakes. San Jose, featuring 2010 MLS Golden Boot-winner Chris Wondolowski, enters U.S. Open Cup qualification in the second round as a result of their regular-season finish in 2010. The winner of the Portland-San Jose matchup will play host to the Chicago Fire in May in a third and final round of qualification for the chance to enter the tournament proper.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which is recognized as U.S. Soccer’s club national championship, enters its 98th edition in 2011. Founded in 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is an annual, single-elimination competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer.
