West Bromwich Albion is one of the more historic clubs in English soccer. Founded in 1878, the club was one of the original members of the Football League and has spent most of its existence competing in England’s top flight. West Bromwich Albion has competed in the Premier League in five of the last nine seasons, making its league debut in 2002.

Known as “The Baggies,” West Bromwich Albion is a five-time winner of the prestigious FA Cup and has several other championships to its credit, including a top-league title in 1919-20, the Football League Cup in 1965-66 and, most recently, won the 2007-08 Football League Championship title. West Bromwich Albion is also a five-time FA Cup runner-up.

Now led by acclaimed head coach Roy Hodgson, West Bromwich Albion’s roster features one of the top scorers in the EPL in striker Peter Odemwingie, with a career-best 15 goals on the campaign. The squad also includes midfielder Steven Reid, who starred for Ireland in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, captain and 2009-10 leading scorer Chris Brunt, midfield stalwart Youssouf Mulumbu and Swedish international and defender Jonas Olsson.

West Bromwich Albion went on a recent seven-match unbeaten run, which included a 2-1 win over Liverpool and a 2-2 draw with Arsenal, to help keep pace in the middle of the Premier League table. Recently, the club battled back to a 2-2 draw on the road against Tottenham Hotspur on April 23 and secured a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa on April 30.

The exhibition against West Bromwich Albion is the third scheduled friendly for the Timbers in 2011. Portland also plays host to Dutch side AFC Ajax on Wednesday, May 25, and Mexican power Club America on Thursday, July 7, at JELD-WEN Field.
