PORTLAND, Ore. – United Soccer Leagues announced Thursday that Portland Timbers U-23s forward Mark Sherrod was named honorable mention for the Premier Development League Team of the Week for Week 7.
Sherrod scored his seventh goal of the year as part of a thrilling 4-3 loss to Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC U-23 on June 22. Sherrod’s goal - the game's opening strike - came just 10 minutes into the match as he one-timed a shot from close distance past Sounders FC U-23 goalkeeper Doug Herrick.
Earlier this season, Sherrod was selected as the PDL Player of the Week for Week 3, after becoming just the fourth player in Timbers U-23s history to record a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Victoria Highlanders FC on May 19. The Knoxville, Tenn., native was also named to the PDL Team of the Week in Week 2, scoring a brace in a season-opening 3-0 win over Fraser Valley Mariners FC on May 11.
Overall, Sherrod has scored a team-leading eight goals for the Timbers U-23s this season and ranks among PDL leaders in scoring (19 points), goals and shots (44).
The Timbers U-23s wrap up a season-long, three-game road stretch with two games in British Columbia against Fraser Valley Mariners FC on Friday at 6 p.m. and Victoria Highlanders FC on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
