Barefoot Soccer tournament, 6.10.12

Portland Timbers players, coaches, staff and Timber Joey continue to give back to the Portland community, even during the middle of the season. This month, the Timbers supported many youth clubs and camps and organizations such as Special Olympics Oregon through Stand Together.

Stand Together All-Star
Timbers midfielders Kalif Alhassan and Eric Alexander and Timber Joey awarded Davonna Livingston as a Stand Together All-Star for her work at Julia West House. Livingston volunteers at Julia West House tutoring transitioning adults working towards their GEDs. She was presented with Timbers memorabilia, tickets to a Timbers home match and a video spot on the Portland Timbers website.

Mick Hoban and John Bain visit WL Henry Elementary School
Community ambassadors Mick Hoban and John Bain visited WL Henry Elementary School on June 8 to participate in the school’s Fitness Friday. Hoban and Bain ate breakfast with the students, visited classrooms and spoke to the children about the importance of education and healthy lifestyles.

The Papa Murphy’s Lumberjack Pizza is chosen!
Midfielder Eric Alexander, goalkeeper Joe Bendik and Timber Joey visited Papa Murphy’s on June 8 to select the Lumberjack Pizza from online submissions. Papa Murphy’s prepared the top three submissions, and ultimately, a salami, spinach, sun-dried tomato, artichoke heart, and green pepper pie was chosen. The Lumberjack Pizza is available at local Papa Murphy’s locations through September 3. For every Lumberjack Pizza ordered, $1 will be donated to the Portland Timbers Community Fund.

The Timbers, Timbers U-23s and Portland Rain go barefoot for a day
Midfielder Kalif Alhassan, Timber Joey, the Timbers U-23s and Portland Rain attended the Portland Barefoot 3 v. 3 Tournament on June 10 at Concordia University, benefitting Grassroot Soccer, Inc. and MercyCorps (photo above). Everyone signed autographs, took pictures and the U-23s and Rain participated in exhibition matches. 

Brent Richards honored at Burgerville by Timbers Army Northern Alliance
Timbers forward Brent Richards was recognized by the Timbers Army Northern Alliance at Burgerville on June 21 for being the first home-grown player. He met with Timbers Army members, signed autographs and was presented with a scarf.

Timber Joey and coach John Ireland support Adelante Chicas
The Adelante Chicas soccer academy visited JELD-WEN Field June 22 to celebrate their soccer tournament earlier this month. The girls club was rewarded with a locker room and stadium tour, on-field drills with strength and conditioning coach John Ireland and autographs with Timber Joey. Adelante Chicas is a program for girls from third to 12th grades to encourage healthy lifestyles, leadership, a strong sense of cultural identity and ultimately, pursuing higher education after high school.


Stand Together: Special Olympics Oregon Soccer Festival





The Timbers support Special Olympics Oregon for the Cascadia Challenge
In the lead-up to the Portland vs. Seattle match, the Special Olympics Oregon Timbers took on the Special Olympics Washington Sounders as part of the annual Cascadia Challenge at adidas Village on June 23. Timbers defenders Futty Danso and Lovel Palmer and Timber Joey guest coached Timbers front office staff and Special Olympics athletes. The Special Olympics Oregon Timbers and the Special Olympics Washington Sounders also played at halftime at the following day’s match on JELD-WEN Field.

The Timbers presented 2012 field grants to Hacienda CDC and Forest Park Elementary School
The Portland Timbers, adidas and the City of Portland presented Hacienda Community Development Corporation with a field grant of $25,000 for a futsal field in the NE Portland Cully neighborhood. Bottles, also in NE Portland, held a fundraiser earlier in the month with Timbers defenders Chris Taylor and Steve Purdy, benefitting Hacienda’s and the futsal field project.

The Timbers and adidas also presented Forest Heights Soccer Club Field Improvement Team with $40,000 to help fund a micro-turf pitch at Forest Park Elementary School in Portland for use by the students and community.
