Portland Timbers announce clubs for 2013 Adopt-A-Club Program

Sal Zizzo, Adopt A Club, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Timbers today announced the eight local youth soccer clubs to participate in the Timbers’ Adopt-a-Club program, presented by CenturyLink, in 2013. Through the program, the Timbers provide players to serve as mentors for the youth club’s players and coaches.

The Timbers, in partnership with CenturyLink, successfully launched Adopt-a-Club during their inaugural MLS season in 2011. Including the youth clubs selected in 2013, the Timbers’ Adopt-a-Club program will have provided mentorship for thousands of youth at 22 different clubs across Southwest Washington and Oregon in its first three seasons.

Among the exclusive Adopt-a-Club benefits, the participating clubs receive a private clinic run by the club’s mentor Timbers player, a coaching clinic conducted by a Timbers coach and alumni ambassador Scot Thompson, and on-field recognition of one selected youth player from the club at an upcoming Timbers home match at JELD-WEN Field.

In addition to the selected Adopt-a-Club participants, the five adidas Timbers Alliance clubs – Bend FC Timbers (Bend, Ore.), Eastside Timbers (Gresham, Ore.), Rogue Valley Timbers (Medford, Ore.), Westside Timbers (Beaverton, Ore.) and Vancouver Timbers (Vancouver, Wash.) – will also receive the benefits of the program.

A special meet-and-greet event with representatives from the selected youth clubs and the Timbers player mentors on June 17, helped kick off the 2013 Adopt-a-Club program, presented by CenturyLink. Each of the selected youth clubs were chosen from a large number of applicants.
