Real Salt Lake Reserves edge Timbers Reserves, 1-0

SANDY, Utah — A goal by forward Devon Sandoval in the first half was the difference as the Real Salt Lake Reserves edged the Portland Timbers Reserves 1-0 in MLS Reserve League play at America First Field on Saturday morning.

With a second straight win, the Real Salt Lake Reserves (5-3-3, 19pts) jump the Timbers Reserves (4-4-2, 14pts) in the standings and move into third place in the MLS Reserve League’s West Division.

The lineup for the Timbers Reserves featured forward Bright Dike and defender Futty Danso, and defender David Horst subbed in during the second half as all three players continue to work their way back from injury.

The Real Salt Lake Reserves pressured early, forcing Timbers goalkeeper Milos Kocic to make several key stops in the first half. Kocic tipped a shot by Real Salt Lake forward Robbie Findley over the crossbar in the 28th minute for one of his seven saves in the first half.

Minutes following a shot by midfielder Khari Stephenson off the post, the Real Salt Lake Reserves found the game’s lone goal in the 38th minute from Sandoval off a pass from midfielder Sebastian Velasquez.

The Timbers Reserves had the better of the run of play in the second half. Dike, pressured by a defender, had a breakaway chance saved by Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez in opening minutes of the second half. In the 66th minute, forward Sebastián Rincón dribbled into the box before firing a shot on goal that was also saved by Fernandez.

The Timbers Reserves and Real Salt Lake Reserves cap a home-and-home set Sunday, Sept. 8, at JELD-WEN Field; kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (Pacific). Tickets are available for purchase through the JELD-WEN Field box office and online at www.portlandtimbers.com.
