All-Star: The Flaming Lips, Cold War Kids headline festivities in Portland ahead of 2014 All-Star Game

NEW YORK (Wednesday, July 23, 2013) - Major League Soccer today announced the slate of events for the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star week in Portland, Ore., including two free concerts from headlining musical acts The Flaming Lips and Cold War Kids. The six-day celebration in downtown Portland will kick off on Friday, August 1 with exciting fan events extending through the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday, August 6 (6:30 p.m. PT, ESPN2, UniMas, TSN and RDS).

On Sunday, August 3, MLS Experience at Waterfront Park presented by AT&T will provide a groundbreaking day of world-class live music, entertainment, partner activations and other exciting activities from 12-7 p.m. PT.  Framing the iconic Portland skyline, Waterfront Park boasts a natural amphitheater where The Flaming Lips concert presented by AT&T and Samsung Galaxy S® 5 Active™, with opening act Radiation City, will draw a capacity crowd of 11,000 fans for a show at 5 p.m. PT.  The Flaming Lips are an internationally lauded indie rock band with critical and commercial success producing over 15 albums of music and thrilling fans with their live performances. The concert, which is free to the public, will also be streamed live at www.MLSsoccer.com/concert.

The six-day MLS Experience at Pioneer Courthouse Square presented by adidas will come alive from Friday, August 1 through Wednesday, August 6. It will include a soccer field on the square, autograph sessions with soccer greats, and, at the center of it all, the entertainment stage for concerts, celebrity interviews, DJ’s, and more. The week at Pioneer Courthouse Square will be highlighted by a free Cold War Kids concert presented by AT&T on Tuesday at 9 p.m. PT, as well as a Men in Blazers live show on Monday at 9 p.m. PT.  Please visit www.MLSsoccer.com/allstar for information about the concert and the Men in Blazers show.  While ticketed seating for the live Men in Blazers show has already sold out, fans can register for the ticket wait list by clicking here. Although confirmed seating and unobstructed viewing locations cannot be guaranteed, fans are encouraged to come and enjoy the show from the public areas of Pioneer Courthouse Square.

MLS will be providing RFID technology based ‘MLS EXPERIENCE FAN PASS’ to interconnect various AT&T MLS All-Star events and fan activities. Throughout the week, fans can use their MLS Experience Fan Pass to check in at different events and sponsor activities. Participants who check-in will be eligible for exclusive 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star giveaways (Friday – Wednesday). Fans can pre-register at www.mlssoccer.com/FanPassReg and pick-up their passes at Pioneer Courthouse Square starting August 1st.

In addition to the events at Waterfront Park and Pioneer Courthouse Square, MLS also invites fans to enjoy special events at Providence Park in the days leading up to the AT&T MLS All-Star Game. On Monday, the Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game will see a roster of MLS homegrown players compete against the Portland Timbers U-23s. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PT and the game will be streamed live on WatchESPN and MLSsoccer.com. Fans can secure free tickets to the game by visiting Chipotle.com/Homegrown.  

Tuesday, the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Stars will hold an open training at Providence Park starting at 12:30 p.m. PT followed by the Special Olympics Unified Sports soccer match presented by MLS WORKS and ESPN on the game field.  The Special Olympics Unified Team from the United States will take on their counterparts from Germany at 2 p.m. PT. Fans are also encouraged to attend the MLS WORKS/Portland Timbers All-Star Community Day presented by Wells Fargo which will take place at Montavilla Park on Monday, August 4, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. PT.  Activities will include inflatables, carnival games, soccer tournament and clinics.  All-Stars and executives will be on hand to unveil the new Portland Timbers Field at Montavilla Park presented by adidas from 2:30-3:30 p.m. PT.
