Timbers on Campus | Former Timbers U-23s Hugo Rhoads makes ESPN Sportscenter Top 10

Timbers U-23s defender Hugo Rhoads was featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 for a goal in University of Portland’s 1-1 draw with Duquesne Sept. 12. Rhoads lashed a half-volley from just outside the box into the upper right corner in the 43rd minute to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead.


Timbers Academy product Jesse Garcia-Aguilar tallied his first collegiate goal and assist for the University of Akron, tallying the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over the University of Central Florida on Sept. 12. Garcia connected with Timbers U-23 veteran Sam Gainford in the 66th minute after setting up Akron’s opening goal in the 33rd minute. Gainford registered his first assist of the season. The Zips beat Hartford 2-0 on Sunday to claim their home tournament and take on Tulsa Saturday, Sept. 20.


U-23s midfielder Omar Holness made his senior debut for the Jamaican National Team in a 3-1 loss to Canada in an international friendly Sept. 9, playing 11 minutes as a second half substitute. Holness has been a standout for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, recently registering an assist in a 2-0 road win against William & Mary Tuesday night. Fellow U-23s goalkeeper Brandon Moore posted his fourth-straight clean sheet in the win for UNC. The Tar Heels are currently the top ranked program in the nation according to College Soccer News, the NSCAA and Soccer America.

Timbers U-23s orward Ben Strong was named Atlantic Coast Conference’s Co-Player of the Week Tuesday after scoring a brace for Louisville in a 5-0 win over Duke in their regular-season opener Sept. 13. The goals were Strong’s first for the Cardinals.


University of San Francisco and Timbers U-23s forward Miguel Aguilar was named the College Sports Madness WCC Player of the Week after he tallied his third goal of the season in the 89th minute to secure a 2-0 home win for the University of San Fransisco over Central Arkansas on Sept. 14.

U-23s midfielder Devon Fisher was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week, it was announced Monday. The Virginia Commonwealth University junior led the Rams to a 2-1 overtime win over Georgetown on Sept. 11. Fisher scored his second goal of the season late on to equalize for the Rams, and then assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime to help lead VCU to its first victory over a ranked opponent in over three years.
