International Notebook: Thorns FC lead national teams to tournament titles in Algarve, Cyprus Cups

Algarve Cup victory, USWNT

A full week of international play at the Algarve and Cyprus Cups wrapped up Wednesday. Highlighting the day, the U.S. Women’s National Team captured the Algarve Cup, while Thorns FC players went head-to-head in the Cyprus Cup final.

The USWNT claimed their 10th Algarve Cup championship with a 2-0 against France, returning the favor after France’s win in a friendly between the two sides last month. Thorns FC forward Alex Morgan started for the United States and played 85 minutes.

In the Cyprus Cup, England secured the win 1-0 over Canada – a match that featured three Thorns (HIGHLIGHTS). While Christine Sinclair created a few chances for Canada, it was Jodie Taylor and her England side that captured the win. New Thorns FC defender Rhian Wilkinson also made the start for Canada.

Steph Catley and Australia capped the Cyprus Cup with a six-goal output in a win over Czech Republic, finishing the tournament in fifth place.
