T2, the Portland Timbers new USL club, got off to flying start at Merlo Field Sunday night with a 3-1 victory over Real Monarchs SLC. T2 forward Kharlton Belmar had a brace in the match while Trinidad & Tobago international Rundell Winchester opened his scoring account.
Belmar's 31st minute header--the first-ever T2 goal--came via a great cross from midfielder Schillo Tshuma. The Timbers MLS speedster, on loan to T2, split two Monarchs defenders before chipping it across the face of goal whereupon Belmar slammed it home.
Belmar added a second in 54th minute as his non stop pressure upfield forced a turnover from SLC goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez. Belmar pounced on it and slotted it home.
Winchester added to the rout in the 58th minute as he ghosted through the Monarchs defense to connect on a perfectly placed ball from T2 defender Andy Thoma.
