#ThrowbackThursday | A 2014 match between Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps sees a stunning volley from Diego Valeri

On Saturday, the Portland Timbers will meet Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Providence Park in a Cascadia Cup match that will mark their second meeting already this season and their 81st all-time meeting across all competitions (7:30pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).

While the Whitecaps won in the two teams' first match this season, a 2-1 defeat for Portland at BC Place on March 28, the last time these two teams met at Providence Park in the MLS regular season, on September 20, 2014, the result skewed the Timbers' way.

In that match, the Timbers got on the board first in the 28th minute, when Diego Valeri volleyed home a Jorge Villafaña cross past Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted in spectacular fashion.

Fanendo Adi then struck twice in quick succession to complete the rout, putting away a 1v1 with Ousted in the 66th minute after he was played through by Valeri. Valeri had brilliantly intercepted the ball at midfield and caught Adi streaking forward with a perfect through ball.

Three minutes later, Adi struck again when Darlington Nagbe placed an incisive pass right onto Adi's feet and the big forward made no mistake with his finish.

Sunday's match will be the seventh meeting between these clubs at Providence Park since both teams joined MLS. The Timbers record at home against the Whitecaps in that span is 3-1-2.
