World Cup Notebook | U.S. Women's National Team prevails 3-1 over Australia

In a battle of Thorns FC teammates, Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath and the U.S. Women’s National Team claimed three critical points with a 3-1 win over Steph Catley and Australia as both teams opened their 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign (WATCH:official match highlights).


Playing in her first World Cup at the age of 21, Catley started and logged 90 minutes in the match, notching her 36th cap for the Matildas, while Heath and Morgan both made appearances as substitutes. Heath entered the match 68th minute, earning her 93rd cap, while Morgan checked in the 79th minute, bringing her cap total to 85.

An exciting match saw the U.S. grab an early lead through University of Portland alum Megan Rapinoe in the 12th minute, but Australia answered to level the match through Lisa De Vanna in the 27th minute. Chicago Red Stars forward Christen Press slotted home the eventual game winner in the 61st minute and Rapinoe added an insurance goal to give her a brace in the 78th minute.


The U.S. squares off against Sweden on Friday, June 12, at 5pm PT on FOX, while Australia takes on Nigeria at 2pm PT on FOX Sports 1.
