Portland Timbers begin 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League group-stage schedule at home Aug. 3

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers will begin play in Group B of the 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League at home against C.D. Dragon of El Salvador on Wednesday, Aug. 3, it was announced today as CONCACAF unveiled the competition’s full group-stage schedule.
Following their tournament-opening home match, the Timbers will travel for a pair of road matches to face Costa Rica’s Club Deportivo Saprissa at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and C.D. Dragon at Estadio Athletico Las Delicias in Santa Tecla, El Salvador, on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Portland concludes group play with a home match against Saprissa at Providence Park on Wednesday, Oct. 19. 


Tickets for Portland’s home matches against C.D. Dragon (Aug. 3) and Club Deportivo Saprissa (Oct. 19) are included as part of Timbers Annual Memberships. Individual tickets will go on sale Friday, July 1, at 10 a.m. (Pacific) and will be available for purchase online at www.timbers.com, by phone at (888) 736-6849 and at the Providence Park box office. A presale for members of the Timbers Annual Member Wait List, Timbers Annual Members, and T2 and Portland Thorns FC season ticket holders will take place on Thursday, June 30, online at www.timbers.com.
The 2016-17 edition of the competition marks Portland’s second appearance in CONCACAF Champions League over the last three seasons as the Timbers previously appeared in the 2014-15 edition of the tournament.

Twenty-four teams are set to participate in this season’s continental championship. The top club from each of the eight, three-team groups will advance to the tournament’s knockout round. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be played between February and April 2017, with the winner of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League earning a berth in the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is the governing body of football in the region, and one of six continental authorities that administer the sport along with FIFA, the world governing body. Founded in 1962 as the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the CONCACAF Champions League tournament adopted its current format in 2008 and crowns the continental club champion among a field of 24 teams representing CONCACAF member associations. The 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League tournament marks the 52nd overall edition of the annual international club competition.
