2016 Rio Olympics Soccer Notebook | Thorns FC players respectively advance as USWNT, Canada and France all move on

Lindsey Horan, USWNT vs. Colombia, 8.9.16

In a busy final day of the 2016 Rio Olympics Women's Soccer group stage matches, Canada beat Germany 2-1 behind a brace from Melissa Tancredi to clinch the top spot in Group F play and advance to the knockout round. It was the first-ever victory for Canada over Germany in their history.

After two wins in their first two matches that assured the Canadians of advancing to the next round, Thorns FC captain Christine Sinclair was rested for the match and did not appear against Germany.

The Canadians will now play the runner-up of Group G in the tournament quarterfinals on Aug. 12.

The United States won Group G as they drew 2-2 against Colombia. Thorns FC midfielder Lindsey Horan received her first start of the tournament, playing the full 90, while fellow midfielder Allie Long came on in the 65th minute.

With the game even at 1-1 in the second half, Horan tested Colombian 'keeper Sandra Sepulveda with a dangerous drive that was tipped just over the bar. Though Mallory Pugh gave the Americans a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute, a surprisingly gritty Colombian side tied it up in the 90th minute on a free kick. None-the-less, the draw proved to be enough to clinch the group with the USWNT now facing either Australia or Sweden in the quarterfinals on Aug. 12.

Meanwhile, Amandine Henry and France blasted past New Zealand 3-0 in their final opening round match to finish second in Group G. Henry, who started her third straight game in the Olympics, played 72 minutes in the win.

France now moves on to the quarterfinals to face Thorns FC teammate Sinclair and Canada on Aug. 12.
