EVENTS

AT&T MLS All-Star game
On August 6 at Portland’s Providence Park, reigning UEFA and German Bundesliga Champions FC Bayern Munich will take on the MLS All-Stars in the first major league All-Star event of any kind played in the Rose City.

Founded in 1900, Bayern Munich boasts a lineup of international superstars: Franck Ribery (France), Arjen Robben (Holland), Javi Martinez (Spain), as well as German national team stalwarts Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Müller. They are coached by former FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, who took charge of the club in 2013.

The match will be televised live on ESPN2 and in more than 130 countries worldwide. Tickets go on sale in April.

CONCACAF Champions League
As the MLS club with the best 2013 West Conference regular-season record, the Timbers secured one of four U.S. berths in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League, an annual competition among the best soccer teams in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. This is their first appearance.

The 24-team tournament consists of two stages. August through October, eight 3-team groups compete in a group stage, with each winner advancing to the knockout round March through May, 2015. Winner competes as one of seven clubs in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Mexican teams Cruz Azul and Club América are the most successful clubs in the competition's history, each having won five times. In 2011, Real Salt Lake became the first MLS team to advance to the final before losing to Monterrey (Mexico). The 2013-14 tournament is still in progress, with three of the final eight clubs from MLS. More at concacaf.com.

Cascadia Cup
The Cascadia Cup is awarded to the best of the three major league clubs in the Pacific Northwest - Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers - based on their head-to-head, regular-season record.

The competition was formally created in 2004 by the three supporters groups, though the roots of this regional rivalry date back to 1975 when all three clubs were part of the North American Soccer League.

In 2014, four of the Timbers’ six Cascadia Cup matches will be played at home, the first against Seattle on April 5.

U.S. Open Cup
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, dating to 1913, is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States. An annual, single-elimination tournament, the competition is open to all United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams, from amateur adult club teams to the top tier professional clubs of MLS.

The first round of the single-elimination tournament begins in May, with MLS teams entering in the third round and finals in October. The winner qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League.

The defending U.S. Open Cup champion is D.C. United. Portland’s U.S. Open Cup matches will be announced later this spring.

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil
The world’s most popular global sporting event, the World Cup, will be hosted this summer by Brazil.

32 teams have qualified for the group stage, which begins June 12. The top two teams from each 4-team group advance to a single-elimination phase that concludes with the Final on July 13.

76 nations have participated in at least one World Cup since the first tournament in 1930. Brazil is the only team to have played in every tournament, and won it the most, a total of five times. Spain is the defending champion.

The United States will be making its 10th World Cup appearance in 2014, and seventh consecutive. The United States’ best finish in the modern era came in 2002 when the U.S. topped archrival Mexico in the round of 16 to make it to the quarterfinals. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has made a concerted effort to feature MLS talent on his roster, with the expected Starting XI to be comprised of a MLS core. The final U.S. roster will be announced later this summer.

Group stage runs from June 12-26. Knockout stage from June 28-July 13. U.S. begins play June 16 vs. Ghana.
