Portland Timbers Midfielder David Guzmán snagged an assist on a beautiful set piece corner kick, headed in by a leaping Francisco Calvo in Costa Rica’s 1-1 draw with Canada during Tuesday night’s match in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
With a win, either team could have secured firm control of Group A, but instead, the two leaders split the points with Canada now sitting in first thanks to a larger tally of goals scored thus far.
Guzmán played a solid 61 minutes and nearly put the Ticos ahead in first-half stoppage time, but his one-timer at the top of the 18’ was deflected away by Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan.
Jamaica also had a strong performance against a tough opponent in Mexico on Thursday night, who has been favored to win Group C. The rematch between the 2015 Gold Cup finalists ended in a 0-0 draw, despite El Tri putting 14 shots on target to the Reggae Boyz's five.
Mexico and Jamaica sit atop Group C with 4 points each, with Mexico holding a slight advantage due to their goal total.
Jamaica plays their final game of the group stage against El Salvador on July 16 (2pm PT, FS2 & Univision Deportes; TSN GO) and Costa Rica will take on French Guiana at 4:30pm PT Friday (FS1 & UniMas; TSN GO).
