Thorns FC, midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir mutually agree to part ways

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC and midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir have mutually agreed to part ways, it was announced today.

“Dagny was exceptional both on and off the field this past season and we are supportive of her decision to return to Iceland,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for Thorns FC. “We appreciate the commitment that Dagny and her family made to the Thorns and wish her, Omar and Brynjar all the best in the future.”

During the 2019 season, Brynjarsdottir appeared in 21 games, which ranked as the third-most on the team, making 17 starts and logging 1,564 minutes. Playing her third season with Thorns FC, Brynjarsdottir tallied one goal. She also started her first career NWSL playoff game for Portland, logging 90 minutes against the Chicago Red Stars in the semifinals.

“I want to say thank you to the entire Thorns FC organization. It was truly an honor to represent one of the best clubs in the world,” said Brynjarsdottir. “I am grateful for the belief the club showed in me as a player after I gave birth to my son and for all the support during my time in Portland. And to the fans in the Rose City, you take the women’s game to the next level. There is nothing like playing at Providence Park.”

In three seasons with Portland, Brynjarsdottir played in 49 regular-season matches (35 starts), tallying six goals and two assists. She was part of Portland’s 2016 team that won the NWSL Shield and also helped Thorns FC secure their second NWSL Championship in 2017.

“We are all incredibly grateful to Dagny and the team-first attitude she brought to the Thorns every single day,” said Thorns FC head coach Mark Parsons. “Dagny’s mentality to always want to improve, compete and support her teammates was contagious and very important this season. We are going to miss her tenacious performances in our midfield. Off the field, Dagny, Omar and Brynjar are Thorns for life and we look forward to seeing them back at Providence Park in the future.”
