By The Numbers | Thorns defense leads the way in new league shutout record

On a night that saw Portland celebrate their 2021 NWSL Shield-winning year and recognize the retirements of Britt Eckerstrom and Katherine Reynolds, the Thorns also managed to set another record. Here's a look at the numbers from the 0-0 draw with the North Carolina Courage.

Thorns FC set the NWSL single-season record with its 13th shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Bella Bixby registered her ninth shutout in 15 appearances this season.

Part of the reason Portland was able to set the record was their defense's ability to limit shots on goal. Across 24 matches played this year, Portland has allowed four or less shots on target to an opponent 16 times this season, including only allowing two tonight against North Carolina.

In her performance tonight, forward Sophia Smith led all Thorns in shots (7), shots on target (3) and chances created (4).
