Chara & Rincón assist with Somos Timbers summer outreach programs

Sometimes, a simple helping hand is all it takes. When it comes to Timbers players Sebastián Rincón and Diego Chara, they're prepared to lend both.

Throughout the month of May, Somos Timbers collected money through the adidas Timbers Team Store to put together health kits for less fortunate children in the community.

Having raised over $1,050, thanks to the generous donations of our fans, Somos Timbers was able to put together 500 health kits, which included water, bilingual booklets, bilingual flyers on health tips, crayons, granola bars, fruit cups, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other health essentials.

With the help of Portland forward Rincón, some of the health kits were distributed in Washington County last month, in conjunction with the Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation, a group focused on providing healthcare to those with language or cultural barriers.

Last Thursday, Portland teammate Chara visited local underserved families at Nuevo Amanecer in Woodburn to help distribute the remaining health kits (above and right) and had the opportunity to share some time playing soccer with children in the community.

“For me, to play and share with the kids is something beautiful and unique. They see me as a role model, and it moves me to know that the kids enjoy my way of living the sport of soccer,” said Chara.

“In this area, many families don’t have enough money to buy all those school materials. We greatly appreciate the support,” said Nuevo Amanecer’s summer program coordinator Fabiola Camacho. “We also appreciate Diego Chara for taking the time to give the kids an hour of dreams because they have all been looking forward to this moment. We thank the Timbers very much, and they are an inspiration for our children who are the future of our country.”

The distribution of these health kits is a part of the Somos Timbers outreach program. The Somos Timbers campaign works with organizations throughout the community to promote youth development, education, and health.
