Chivas de Guadalajara to play Club León in exhibition match at Providence Park on Mar. 26, 2016

PORTLAND, Oregon – Providence Park, home of the 2015 MLS Cup Champion Portland Timbers, will host a very exciting Mexican Premier League (Liga MX) match between two of the country’s most beloved teams, Chivas de Guadalajara and Club León.  The match is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 at 7 PM PT.  This will be the first time that these two First Division teams play in the Pacific Northwest.  Both squads feature players with international experience who have represented there countries of origin with minutes played on their national teams.



Club Deportivo Guadalajara; often simply known as Guadalajara, and popularly known as las Chivas is a Mexican professional football club based in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Guadalajara plays in Liga MX with 11 First Division titles, 7 Campeón de Campeones, 1 InterLiga, 1 Copa Challenger, 4 Copa Oros de Occidente, and 3 Copa México.  Guadalajara is one of the ten founding members of the Mexican First Division and, along with longstanding rivals Club América; they have never been relegated to the second-tier division. Guadalajara was the runner-up of the 2010 Copa Libertadores.


Chivas is led by the all time team scoring leader and captain and national team member, Omar Bravo as well as additional national team members Oswaldo Alanis and Raul “el Dedos” Lopez, Carlos Salcido and Carlos ‘Gullit’ Peña who now playing on the Chivas squad will meet his former team.   


León - is a Mexican professional football club based in the city of León, in the state of Guanajuato. They scored 80 goals last season beating the world record.  León has won the Primera División title seven times: in 1948, 1949, 1952, 1956, 1992, Apertura 2013 and most recently Clausura 2014. They became the first Mexican "Campeonísimo" (winner of the League and the México Cup in the same year) in 1949. In 1993 León was the CONCACAF Champions' Cup runner-up, losing the final match against Costa Rican team Deportivo Saprissa, in one of the greatest upsets among the defeats in the club's history. They are also only the second Liga MX team to win back-to-back championships in short tournaments. 


In addition among the players on the roster, León has 2 players from the Mexican National Team, Luis “Chapo” Montes and José Juan “Gallito” Vásquez as well as US National Team member, goalkeeper, William Yarborough and Argentine national squad player Mauro Boselli.
