WATCH | FIFA The Best Awards honors record-setting Sinclair

Christine Sinclair, Thorns vs Reign, 09.30.20

Portland Thorns FC captain Christine Sinclair was recognized during today’s The Best FIFA Football Awards show for setting the international goal-scoring record on January 29, 2020.

Her record-setting 185th international goal game in 2020 CONCACAF Woman’s Olympic Qualifying during a two-goal performance against St. Kitts and Nevis. She has since taken her world-record total to 186 goals.

Asked by former France international Laura Georges if she “felt the pressure” to pass United States legend Abby Wambach’s mark, Sinclair said, “I’m not going to lie: I felt the pressure, especially as the record got closer and closer. It was everything that people wanted to talk about. It’s the only thing I got asked by reporters about …

“It was nice to get it out of the way in the first game [of the tournament] and it was amazing to be able to celebrate with friends, and having some friends and family in that stands while we could still have people in the stands. That was an incredible moment for me.”

Sinclair was also asked about which of her 186 international goals was her most memorable, as well as for her thoughts on the process of the women’s game.

The full interview with the Thorns’ captain can be seen on FIFA's YouTube channel and begins at the 1:22:39 mark of the video.
