PORTLAND, Ore.
– United Soccer Leagues announced today that Portland Timbers midfielder
Johan Claesson
was selected to the USL First Division Team of the Week for Week 14. Claesson scored the Timbers’ game-winning goal against the Austin Aztex last weekend.
A native of Uppsala, Sweden, Claesson netted his first goal of the season in second-half stoppage time to lift the Timbers to a 2-1 win over the Aztex on July 11. The Timbers are now unbeaten in their last 14 league games. It’s Claesson’s first USL First Division Team of the Week selection this season.
Claesson, 27, joined the Timbers for the 2009 campaign after playing the last four seasons with Gefle IF of Sweden’s top league. He currently ranks among Timbers team leaders in games (15) and minutes played (1,264) and shots (25).
The Timbers face the Miami FC Blues in a two-game series this weekend on Friday at 5 p.m. (Pacific) and Sunday at 3 p.m. (Pacific) at Florida International University. A live broadcast will be available online at
