PORTLAND
, Ore.
– United Soccer Leagues today announced that Portland, Ore., native and former Portland Timbers forward
Paul Conway
will be inducted into the USL Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a player in the USL First Division from 1998-2005.
Conway, along with the rest of the Hall of Fame Class of 2009, will be honored at the USL Hall of Fame Ceremony at the USL Annual General Meeting in November.
After seven seasons with the Charleston Battery, Conway, who attended Portland’s Jesuit High School, played the final season of his career with the Timbers in 2005. He signed with the club in late May and went on to play 691 minutes in 13 games and scored a goal. His father,
Jimmy
, was an assistant coach for Portland during the 2005 season.
Conway’s USL First Division career was highlighted by back-to-back Scoring and Goal Scoring Championships in 2000 and 2001, 2001 Most Valuable Player honors and a league title in 2003 with the Battery. In eight USL First Division seasons, he totaled 79 goals and 29 assists in 178 regular-season matches, logging just under 15,000 minutes played.
“I am very honored and proud to be recognized for my contribution to the USL,” said Conway. “My years in Charleston and brief time in Portland provided many memorable and enjoyable moments. As the USL continues to play an important role in the development of soccer throughout North America and beyond, being recognized as an individual who helped contribute, albeit in a small way, is personally very rewarding.”
Following his retirement, Conway, 39, returned to Charleston, S.C., where he currently resides with his wife, Jennifer, and daughters Madeleine and Gwendolyn. He is a practicing attorney with most of his work involving corporate transactional work for energy corporations and occasionally serves as a color commentator for USL on Fox Soccer Channel broadcasts.
